Hiking Trail 1. Capo Caccia - The Giant

1. Capo Caccia - The Giant

When visiting Alghero, a visit to Capo Caccia is a must, a gigantic limestone headland that protects the Gulf. Here, the history of man and nature are inextricably linked. The footpath we propose follows the edge of the cliff overlooking the sea. Walking on the back of this "limestone giant" we'll reach 200 meters above sea level. We will enjoy unique panoramas of the Foradada islands and the Bay of Porto Conte. When we'll see the Capo Caccia Lighthouse, we'll begin to descend towards the sea. Following an ancient path, we'll reach one of the Spanish defensive towers built at the end of the 1500s. The path overlooks the magnificent Bay of Porto Conte and the headland of Punta Giglio taking us back to our starting point.

Short technical description: 5 km ring footpath lasting about 3 hours. The path is mostly classifiable as tourist-easier (CAI hiking trails ratings) as it does not require hiking experience. However, it should be considered hiker-intermediate since the first 30 minutes take place uphill on a trail with a moderate slope, with some passages with a steep gradient. It requires a minimum effort and level of fitness to face the climb without worries.

Hiking Trail 2. Wild Coast

2. Wild Coast

If you need intimate contact with unspoiled nature and the Mediterranean sea, get ready for this trail with high scenographic content. The trail area is wild, uncrowded and the most scarcely accessible of the Porto Conte Regional Park. It will happen to find ourselves completely alone and immersed in nature, walking on the edge of low cliffs and coastal slopes. The sea will always be with us, along the path marked among the Mediterranean bush. We will pass nearby Spanish watchtowers and small coves. Halfway up the hiking trail, a refreshment stop on the magnificent beach of Porto Ferro. The return will be along an easy way, hidden from the sea but not without surprises: the fallow deer are at home here.

Short technical description: 12 km ring trail that we recommend to expert hikers. It consists of two parts: a coastal trail and an unpaved forest road. The coastal trail alternate short ups and downs with a moderate slope. The return on the forest track runs parallel to a short distance from the coastal trail. It is a wide flat unpaved road that in one hour takes you back to the starting point. In case of need or tiredness, you can leave the coastal trail to continue and/or return by the forest road. A good level of fitness is required to sustain 6 hours of hiking in total.

Hiking Trail 3. Eremitu - Discovering the Nurra Region

3. Eremitu - Discovering The Nurra Region

The starting point is near Baratz lake, the only natural lake in Sardinia. Following the path of the Eremitu, we will discover the southern part of the Nurra region. The path is a pleasant and serene patch of wide pastures and gentle hills covered with Mediterranean scrub and garrigue. It took between 300 and 600 million years to create this sweet landscape. We are moving to one of the oldest areas of Sardinia and the Italian peninsula. This path at its top gives us a unique view of the beach of Portoferro and the far headland of Capo Caccia. We will reach the beach by passing by the "White Tower", a Spanish watchtower. We will rest from the descent and we will have time to take beautiful photos of the colours of the sea. We will return to Baratz lake passing through the dunes. Along this trail, with a little luck, we'll observe kestrels, buzzards, tortoises, partridges, and other wild animals.

Short technical description: it is a 6.5 km ring trail lasting 3 hours. The path follows a gravel forest road for more than half the way to the highest point of 154 meters with flat parts and then slight and moderate slopes. The descent is along a path traced among the Mediterranean scrub, some points with a steep gradient. The magnificent panorama in front of us is a distraction, so we ask you to pay attention and wear hiking boots with a good grip. For this reason, we prefer to classify this trail with a level of hiking-intermediate.

Hiking Trail 5. Stintino and Capo Falcone - Where the Northwest Ends

5. Stintino and Capo Falcone - Where the Northwest Ends

Stintino is one of the most renowned locations in Sardinia and its beaches are rightly called "Paradise on earth". With this trail, we will reach Torre del Falcone at about 189 meters above sea level, the highest tower in the Nurra region. The view is magnificent, it extends 360 °, embracing the Gulf of Asinara and the island itself and the Nurra region to the south up to glimpse Capo Caccia. On one side you will have high and dark cliffs that rise on the open sea, of a deep blue, which contrasts with the placid sea of blue, turquoise and cobalt blue colour. The descent to Capo Falcone will give satisfaction to hikers who want to try something challenging. In the end, the dark cliffs overlooking the sea await you to give you other moments of beauty. If you are lucky, you can spot the peregrine falcon that nests in the ravines or crevices of the cliff. We'll continue down to reach the Pelosa beach, a must, and then return to the starting point.

Short technical description: the route is 6 km long, lasting 3 hours. The first part up to Torre del Falcone takes place on a gravel forest road with slight and moderate slopes. In general, the trail does not present particular difficulties and could be classified as hiking-intermediate. However, the downhill from the tower to Capo Falcone needs extra concentration on foot placement, a good level of fitness and adequate hiking boots to avoid slips. We prefer to recommend it to hikers not first experience.
